The Bank of England announced that Alan Turing will be the face of £50 note this year. However, not everybody knows who this genius was and how his work changed our world.
Who was Alan Turing?
Alan Turing was an English mathematician, highly influential in the development of theoretical computer science. His work provided a formalization of the concepts of algorithm and computation, crucial in many technology fields. Furthermore, Turing is widely considered to be the father of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence.
The Imitation Game
The Academy Award-winning film The Imitation Game introduced Turing’s life and accomplishments to the general public. With actor Benedict Cumberbatch in the main role, the movie tells the story of Alan Turing’s task to crack the German Enigma code with help from fellow mathematicians. Undeniably, the work was crucial for the Allies’ victory and there were major consequences, Professor Jack Copeland has estimated that it shortened the war in Europe by more than two years and saved over 14 million lives.
As data scientists, we dedicate this small tribute to the genius Alan Turing. If Data Science, Machine Learning, and AI are possible things these days, it’s all because of the revolution this man was responsible for decades ago. Thank you, Alan Turing.
